The latest new development from Alpine Metal Tech – a module for geometric inline wire measurement – was approved this week by ASTA Elektrodraht GmbH. The market leader in the production of system-critical copper components for the energy infrastructure is part of the Montana Tech Components AG. With the successful implementation of the project, it was possible to effectively utilize the interdivisional synergies and thus strengthen the corporate group.

The GM100 wire inspection system is integrated directly into the production flow. The copper wires are measured at speeds of up to 700 m/min. Using laser sensors arranged diagonally around the running wire, all geometric features such as wire width, wire thickness, radius quality and parallelism are measured and checked with tight tolerances of up to ±0.01 mm. Different wire types can be set with just a few clicks on the GM100 control unit. In addition, it is possible to perform single measurements when setting up the rolling mill, eliminating the need for time-consuming manual laboratory testing and thus enabling the wire dimension to be changed quickly.

The detected geometry errors are visualized on the screen of the measuring unit and the analysis data is then forwarded to optimize the production process. Thanks to the inline wire inspection, set-up times and rejects can now be drastically reduced, thereby significantly increasing production capacity.
